Hello Lynn & Mark,

My fiancée and I vacationed in Bar Harbor, ME in September of 2004 and visited your restaurant on the third day and everyday after that!

The Eden Vegetarian Cafe was a gem of a find; the food was fabulous, the service spectacular, the atmosphere warm and inviting and the cost was reasonable. I went vegan in January 2003 for health reasons and find it very hard to dine out - and actually enjoy the meal.  Seems like mainstream American restaurants think vegetarian means salad.

I have never tasted anything vegan like this in my life!  After tasting many of the entrees, side dishes and deserts I thought I had fallen off the "vegan wagon"!  WOW!  Everyday (sometimes twice) we visited your establishment, I was more impressed than the time before.  It was the most wonderful dining experience I can remember.  The combinations of ingredients (Color, Texture and Flavor) knocked my socks off!  We enjoyed every dish we sampled:  Root Vegetable Latkes,  Pumpkin Soup, Bento Box, Shepard's Pie, a Seitan Schnitzel dish, Coconut Rice Pudding and many more mouth watering delights.  Each dish was its own work of art - Hats-Off to Lynn & Mark.

We continue to talk about the friendly service and the staff.  On our first visit we were welcomed and served by a young lady who went out of her way to make the whole experience inviting and comfortable.  While speaking with her about being vegan and missing dairy, especially cheese, she disappeared for a moment and returned with "The UnCheese Cookbook".  She suggested a few of her favorites and then wrote the book information down, so I could purchase it later.  She made us feel like we were friends just stopping in for a visit.   We returned the following day for lunch and then again that evening for diner; and several more times during our stay.  It's Addicting!  That evening we were served by a young man who just happened to be our previous servers boyfriend.  I had a little fun with that fact, he had know idea I knew they were a couple, so I joked with him about flirting with the other help and he was very apologetic.  He actually was the perfect gentleman.  He made the whole dining experience comfortable and memorable - comic entertainment (at his expense).

I continue to rave about the whole experience and we have already made plans to return.  Knowing how competitive the restaurant business is - I can only hope you continue to prosper.

So as you can see we enjoyed the service as much as the food.

Thanks for making my vacation a dining experience that included more than salad,

 Dale

Hi all,
For those veg*ns who've been to Mount Desert Island/Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor, you're probably well acquainted with Elaine's Starlight Oasis. Well, that place is gone ... but fear not ... seriously! Elaine's has been replaced by Eden Vegetarian Cafe; and it is beyond better. This menu is the closest rival to Millennium [in San Fran] that I've seen.

Upscale vegetarian food [with many vegan options] with dare I say less pretension? We're in down east Maine, for goodness sake! I had a bento box with sesame noodles, seaweed salad, grilled/seasoned tofu, fiddlehead tempura and other delights. My husband had soy gnocchi in a light, savory sauce with great veggies.

Has anyone else eaten at this new restaurant, which is completely vegetarian, in Bar Harbor? I was impressed enough with the chef's work, which was quite creative, to have lunch and dinner there the same day. Both were among the top meals I have had in my 40 or so years eating veggie

Bar Harbor's Best restaurant, Eden Vegetarian Cafe

I am not a strict vegetarian but I enjoy vegetarian fare very much. I was delighted to find an amazing restaurant on my recent visit to Bar Harbor, Maine. Everyone should check it out. It was such a wonderful lunch for the 4 of us, that we went back for a really elegant supper. The food is beautifully presented, and delicious. The serving ware is upscale and makes the dining experience just that, an experience. There were surprising flavors and ingredient combinations that delighted all of us. Congratulations to the chefs and I will return on my next visit to the area.

An excellent place for vegetarian fare
I recently had both dinner and lunch at this new vegetarian cafe and was incredibly impressed with the food. The meals were easily among the top two or three vegetarian meals I've had in the last 30 years. While the ingredients were excellent, what really made the dishes stand out was the creativity and care the chef showed in combining textures and flavors.

Recommended Dishes: everything.

"Eden is a new, little restaurant located right on the beautiful Maine coast in Bar Harbor, a tourist Mecca during the warmer months. Eden is expensive, but their creative gourmet presentations are both a joy for the eyes as well as the palate. Their Root Vegetable Latkes are a delight, and their Pumpkin Soup is the best I've ever tasted. This is a gem of a restaurant!"   LS, Exeter, ME

"This vegan masterpiece is placed in the middle of lobster country, but can hold its own among other restaurants. The entrées are delicious, the appetizers are even better. A little pricey, but the food is well worth it, and the serving sizes quite sufficient." Exeter, ME

"My wife and I had two excellent meals at this café. The seitan is homemade and particularly worth trying, as are the desserts. The menu is almost totally vegan (when we were there, all entrées and 75% of the desserts were) which was also great. The food is prepared with great skill and creativity. Definitely eat here!"  MB, Greenbelt, MD

"Two of the best meals I have had in 30 years as a vegetarian occurred one day when I had lunch and dinner at this new restaurant in Bar Harbor. All the dishes showed a great deal of creativity and were obviously the product of an extremely talented chef. Here's examples of some of the entrées: Shepard's Pie (baby carrots, asparagus, morels, truffle-scented smashed new potatoes), Eggplant Napoleon (roasted kale, oven-dried tomatoes, sweet potato boursin), Bento box (grilled tofu, miso butter, seaweed salad, pickled vegetables, herb tempura, soba noodles). I really can't rave enough about this place. Easily worth a visit if you are ever anywhere near Acadia National Park."  RC,  Ithaca, NY

A Feast for all of your senses!!!!"

Even if you are not a vegetarian, and my husband is not, you can't miss a meal at Eden. Our last trip to Bar Harbor in July 2004 included 3 nights in a row at Eden - there were so many amazing things on the menu, we had to go back to try them all!!! The owners, Lynn and Mark, pay special attention to all aspects of your meal, from the atmosphere in the dining room, the careful preparation of each selection, to the presentation that will delight your eyes!! With a full bar --- including a full selection of organic wines and beers, this is a place to go for a great night out. You can check out their website at www.barharborvegetarian.com for more information. They are only open April - October and beginning mid-September, they will be closed on Sundays. This is a can't miss for all!!

Local, organic food

We had dinner here in June 2006. We actually chose to eat at Eden because they source their food locally, supporting small-scale, organic producers, and for us this is as important as how the food is cooked. We knew the restaurant was vegetarian but hadn't realised that it is, in fact, vegan. We had never eaten at a vegan restaurant before (both of us are meat eaters) and were pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was, especially the pecan-crusted seitan cutlets and the classy blueberry patisserie. The owner and chef clearly love what they do, and it shows in the quality of the cooking and the overall presentation. The dining room is quite small but nicely lit, with cool, lounge-type music playing. Our only gripe was with the service, which was slow, especially at the beginning, when we were starving! It would probably be a good idea to reserve ahead during the summer season - we were there pre-season and quite late, and the restaurant was still almost full.

A must, even for non-vegetarians
You must sample the wide range of food here, even if you're not a vegetarian. This laid back, friendly cafe/restaurant serves up some real treats in a cosy atmosphere. Good value for money. Try to book in advance, & remember that it closes at 9pm!
